«Stop Green Washing»

«As 2025 comes to a close, our stories this year have captured both the progress made on our shared global agenda and the challenges that continue to test our collective resolve.
This week, our annual year-ender 20 brands called out for greenwashing highlights the rise of "greenrinsing" – where companies set ambitious climate targets to attract investment, only to weaken, delay or quietly abandon them later.
While efforts to improve transparency and accountability gained momentum in several jurisdictions, the story also traces how carbon capture technologies and “clean” gas narratives have been used to justify continued fossil fuel expansion, underscoring the gap between climate pledges and real-world outcomes.
Meanwhile, East Asia this week provided stories of progress. In Japan, cities are expanding food waste vending machines that sell unsold bakery items at a discount – a small but creative way to cut emissions and waste. In South Korea, authorities announced plans to ban labels on bottled water from 2026, a significant policy move aimed at reducing plastic waste at scale.
We also looked at a recent report that revealed Singapore continued to reinforce its role as Southeast Asia’s green start-up hub, even as infrastructure and financing gaps persist. The region pushed ahead of the US and Europe in electric vehicle adoption, while shifting energy investments highlighted the evolving power landscape.
Elsewhere, Taiwan delayed a pioneering ocean thermal energy project over deep-sea environmental concerns, and the Philippines secured major blue-economy financing to support marine protection.
This marks our last Insights newsletter of 2025, and we want to thank you for being our readers and supporting our work throughout the year. We will continue to publish interesting year-enders for the rest of the month, and we'll be back in January to continue our mission of providing you with the latest news and analyses in sustainable development.
From our team to yours, we wish you a joyful festive season and a Happy New Year!».
